Beat the Odds

The Cancer Wellness Foundation held its 3rd annual fundraiser, “Beat the Odds” Casino Night and Drawdown Event, on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the beautiful Wynlakes Country Club. Natalie Pirnie coordinated all the decorations and lighting in keeping with the casino night theme and in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Guests enjoyed playing in a venue which included real casino tables with all the traditional table games such as poker, blackjack, and craps. Slot machines and a roulette wheel rounded out the realistic feel of Las Vegas casino. Dr. Alex Whitley, a radiation oncologist with Central Alabama Radiology Oncology, provided some insight into his work and the needs of the patients he sees each day. Board member and doctorate of nurse practice, Jennifer Conner, also shared her experiences by describing the needs of cancer patients. Dr. Avery, an oncologist with Alabama Oncology and Hematology Associates, played the trumpet with fellow jazz band members, Henry Pugh on keyboard and vocals, and Ted Mann, on trombone. The highlight of the evening came with the announcement of the drawdown and nine lucky winners split the pot of $10,000. The evening concluded with the raffle drawing, and winners took home a large screen TV, donated by the foundation’s board president, Tom Broughton, a Yeti cooler donated by The Locker Room, and Iron Bowl tickets donated by Total Sports Travel.
