Krewe of Athenians
The Krewe of Athenians hosted its 69th annual ball on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Convention Center at the Renaissance Hotel. This elegant event featured a “Triple Crown” theme to celebrate the royal legacy of the current queen, Mary Elmore DeMott, daughter of Dr. Miles Lamar DeMott and Elmore Inscoe DeMott, the Queen of Athenians in 1988. Her grandmother, Elmore Bartlett Inscoe, was the first of the three Athenians crowns in 1960.
Guests were greeted at the entrance of the ballroom by a winner’s circle themed display that included a horse statue draped in a Krewe of Athenians blanket and crowned with roses like a triple crown winner. The Stacey Coake Orchestra from Nashville provided the entertainment along with a special appearance by the Dapper Dans, a barbershop quartet from Disneyland.
Maids of the Court were Miss Isabella Lynn Barrera, Miss Elizabeth Starke Clements, Miss Savannah Olivia Elrod, Miss Katherine Elizabeth Hamn, Miss Elliott Dreyspring Herron, Miss Christina Claire Hogan, Miss Elsa Thornton Leonard, Miss Lucy Dunn Massey, Miss Margaret Preston McGowin, Miss Annah Lawrence Peeples, Miss Virginia Anne Pinson, Miss Katharine Wilson Starke and Miss Ann Hunter Tankersley.
Princesses of the Court included Miss Jacqueline Rivers Bell, Miss Anne Helen Hawke, Miss Suzanne Bellingrath Holmes, Miss Maddox Elizabeth Jones, Miss Margaret Inge Mantooth, Miss Virginia Walker Moss, Miss Caroline Vreeland Perrine, Miss Elizabeth Callaway Thompson and Miss Jane Frances Waits.
The weekend of festivities kicked off with a Friday night party for Krewe members and out-of-town guests at 129 Coosa. Following the Saturday morning rehearsal was a derby-themed ladies luncheon in honor of the queen at the Capital City Club. The revelry continued after the ball with a queen’s breakfast at Escapology, and the king’s brunch held at the Montgomery Country Club provided the perfect ending to a fabulous weekend.
