Charlie Dunn Where Atlanta Highway and Perry Hill Road converge, to the right is a new home for three brand new, casual dining restaurants for residents of our tiny metropolis to enjoy. It is a space that offers the city the chance to experience three different, uniquely separate flavors that Montgomery has never seen. At the new Perry Hill Crossing Shopping Center, SOL Restaurante Mexicano & Taqueria, Shane’s Rib Shack, and Wharf Casual Seafood all bring something fresh and inspiring to the table, and people are already flocking to get a taste of what’s new. Developer David McClinton, the man behind the scenes who worked to integrate these new dining destinations, had reasons for wanting to give this area a much-needed upgrade.
"The intersection of Perry Hill Road and Atlanta Highway is a bustling commercial intersection,McClinton said. Commercial neighbors like Publix, Winn Dixie, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Wells Fargo made it fairly obvious to me that the Southeast corner needed to be redeveloped for its highest and best use. As I began to study the area and understand certain aspects in which it was underserved, it again was apparent that having more restaurant options of varying sorts would be welcomed.
With the integration of these three establishments, residents of Montgomery and surrounding areas are offered the chance to enjoy a little Mexican flare, fresh catches of seafood, or relish in a new take on our passion for barbeque. Amid familiar fast-food establishments and seeking to fill a void that the community needs, McClinton, who has already recognized that the area is thriving, is confident that this new development will continue to be a hit.
Zaxby’s and Burger King offer quick, quality, convenient service and have had strong openings. Shane’s Rib Shack, SOL Restaurante & Taqueria, and Wharf Casual Seafood provide excellent casual dining choices for our immediate and extended trade area, as evidenced by the crowds at lunch and dinner. Because Perry Hill Crossing is being developed and leased in a way that is filling retail, restaurant, and service needs for its community, I believe the project will continue to be a success, McClinton said.
And now, let’s take a look at exactly what these three new restaurants are, who they serve, and why youshould make a trip and veer off course from your routine go-to dining destinations for something distinctly different that will have you making repeat trips to Atlanta Highway.
WHARF CASUAL SEAFOOD
When veteran restaurant owners and a top executive chef who studied in New York combine their love for delivering quality seafood at a fair price, something special happens. Noah Griggs, chief operating officer and partner for Wharf Casual Seafood, has seen this first hand since joining forces with Chef Stephen Duggar, founder of The Original Wharf in Tallahassee, Florida. Griggs has taken the restaurant beyond its Tallahassee roots and is giving Montgomerians the chance to dive right into Alabama and Florida coastal favorites or enjoy an array of Southern favorites in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
“We bring a unique flair to Montgomery where guests have the option of ordering our entrees broiled, blackened or crispy. It’s great food in a casual setting. We have craft beer and wine that compliments the meal where you can enjoy it all on the outdoor patio with friends and family,” Griggs said.
Be prepared to sit among a rustic, yet modern décor as you are welcomed with an eclectic mix of reclaimed wood and sheet metal that decorate the walls. The vibe of Wharf Casual Seafood is inspiring enough, but Griggs notes that the food alone will make you a repeat customer, and he is thrilled to welcome those who have recognized that their neighborhood needs a boost of flavor.
“People come for the food, and they come back for the service. We want to thank people for their encouragement and support as we bring great food back to the Dalraida community. It is much deserved and long overdue.”

SOL RESTAURANTE & TAQUIERA
It’s authentic Mexican food that you can afford. Owner and Operator Al Luna spent two years looking for the perfect location for his restaurant and worked on the menu for eight months. He traveled to Mexico three times to gather recipes from his family, search for authentic décor, and seek inspiration for what he hoped be the place for people to indulge in fine Mexican cuisine. So far, so good, and people are quickly finding a new hot spot to enjoy all things South of the border.
“Our restaurant is a place where you can bring your family and friends to dine in and enjoy authentic Mexican food and receive exceptional service in a really cool atmosphere,” Luna’s wife, Allison Luna, said. “We are family owned and operated so it automatically has a family vibe. We have already seen professionals at lunch, people on a date night or girls’ night out, and we have received tremendous support from the surrounding neighborhoods. Everyone seems to know each other when they walk in.”
With over 30 years in the restaurant industry and owning over eight restaurants, Mr. and Mrs. Luna know what they’re doing. From staple foods like enchiladas or fajitas, to quesadillas and homemade guacamole, there is something at SOL Restaurante & Taqueria for everyone, including, if you’re willing, the lengua taco.
“We have an extensive menu and offer delicious food and exceptional service. Our prices are affordable, and we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy an item from our authentic side of the menu,” Mrs. Luna said.

SHANE’S RIB SHACK
As residents of the South, or Alabama for that matter, we know ribs. Now, residents of Montgomery have a new place to go when an inevitable craving for ribs and all things barbecue hit. Tina Childs and her husband, Brad Childs, who own and operate Shane’s Rib Shack, have been busy carving out a new niche for those who want to indulge in these timeless Southern favorites, and Shane’s Rib Shack has already seen great customer influx.
“Everyone loves barbecue and ribs. We wanted to bring great food, great service and a fun atmosphere for families. The area we opened in needed a great sit-down restaurant, and we hope to be able to serve everyone in Montgomery with a fun, family-oriented feel. It’s a place where we know you by your name, and you will enjoy the food,” Mrs. Childs said.
From slow-smoked barbecued pork and chicken smothered in their secret barbeque sauce to baby back ribs you can pair with your favorite Southern sides, Shane’s Rib Shack is the new place to be for those who have long awaited the day when Alabama’s favorite dish would be taken to the next level.
“Our food is outstanding, and we strive to give the best customer service around,” Mrs. Childs said. The food portions and price point are enough to have you coming back, but paired with great customer service, you can’t go wrong. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy our great food, and we look forward to building many long-lasting relationships with the customers and community.”
