The Krewe of Athenians
The Krewe of Athenians hosted its 70th annual ball on Saturday, December 14, 2019, at the Convention Center at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel. This elegant event featured a “Grease” theme.
At the entrance of the ballroom, guests were greeted with movie posters taking them back in time and a strikingly lovely 1959 Chevrolet Impala with a blue and white, two-tone paint scheme. The Stacey Coake Orchestra from Nashville provided the entertainment.
Maids of the court were Miss Sara Elizabeth Arrington, Miss Ellen McMillan Cowden, Miss Dora Gunter Eskridge, Miss Emma Madison Fox, Miss Darry Elizabeth Freeman, Miss Carolyn Cooper Hall, Miss Shelton Olivia James, Miss Mary Margaret Kirkland, Miss Lucille Hardwick Longshore, Miss Hayden McKinley Pruett, Miss Mary Neil Starke, Miss Mary Renfroe Stevenson, Miss Maureen Dormin Stevenson, Miss Sydney Allison Stone, Miss Helen Wallace Taylor and Miss Ella Brannen Walker.
Princesses of the court included Miss Hendee Hayes Alias, Miss Sarah Morgan Arrington, Miss Violet Reese Jones, Miss Lucille Gunter Logan, Miss Elizabeth Walker Searcy and Miss Emily Anderson Wiggins.
The weekend of festivities was kicked off with a Friday night party for Krewe members and out of town guests at the Ware-Farley-Hood House in Old Alabama Town. Following the Saturday morning rehearsal was an elegant ladies’ luncheon in honor of the queen at Vintage Year. The revelry continued after the ball with a queen’s breakfast at the Warehouse at Alley Station, and the king’s brunch held at the Montgomery Country Club provided the perfect ending to a fabulous weekend.
