The Pub: Deep-Rooted Tradition

Catherine Calligas
In a city teeming with steak and seafood chains, Charles Anthony’s at The Pub is one of only a few locally-owned restaurants that has stood the test of time. The Pub has been a staple in the Montgomerydining scene for decades. And while various owners have left their mark on it, current owner Charles Anthony Kamburis, Jr., has turned it into one of the most successful and thriving restaurants currently in the capital city.

Like many of The Pub’s former owners, Charles Anthony grew up in a close-knit family in Montgomery’s Greek community. He believes his attraction to working in the restaurant business may be in his blood,as his grandfather worked in the dining industry and he has two uncles who own restaurants in Birmingham. After graduating from Auburn University in 2000 with a degree in political science, Charles Anthony purchased The Pub from Alex Calambakas, when the restaurant was still located in its Montgomery Mall location. By April of 2005, Charles Anthony had built and moved The Pub to its current location near EastChase on Chantilly Parkway. The new building is significantly larger than its predecessor and boasts a covered courtyard as well as a private dining room that can accommodate up to 48 people. Perhaps the most noteworthy change from the Montgomery Mall location is the atmosphere in Charles Anthony’s restaurant. He gives much of the credit for the stylish ambience and decor to his mother, who helped decorate the new building and outfit it with antiques. And while the current location may be much more elegantly decorated, Charles Anthony has purposely created an atmosphere for both the casual diner or those seeking a more upscale or special-occasion dining experience.
Everything at The Pub is done in house, including all seasonings. Steaks and fish are hand-cut by Jessie Williams, who is 76 years old and has been with Charles Anthony from the beginning. Meals are generous in size and come with both a salad and side item, and there is a vast array of appetizers anddesserts to choose from. The signature crab claws are a favorite of many diners, and the dessert menu features such decadent items as chocolate mocha pie and key lime pie. When he’s not busy ensuring that restaurant operations are running smoothly, Charles Anthony can often be found visiting The Pub regulars who have become friends over the years, enjoying either the restaurant’s signature snapper or the split beef tenderloin, often with his favorite side of steamed broccoli.
Charles Anthony’s at The Pub is open Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. They are closed on Sundays with the exception of their Mother’s Day Brunch in May. Reservations are welcomed for parties of ten or more.
