Under The Big Top
The Greatest Show came to Garrett Coliseum on April 13, 2018, as the ladies of La Fete presented their 60th annual ball, Under the Big Top. Although the animals and clowns were absent, there was no shortage of the magical experience that comes along with everything the circus brings. The night was filled with colorful costumes, a circus tent, radiant performers, the smell of popcorn and, of course, a beautiful queen to dazzle the crowd.
The Stage and Scenery Committee members transformed Garrett Coliseum into La Fete’s Under the Big Top circus event. There were silhouettes of circus performers, and the ladies of La Fete performed in a circus ring turned dance floor in front a colorful, hand-painted backdrop of a circus scene.
As guests entered the coliseum, they were given freshly-made popcorn to snack on as they took their seats. They were welcomed to the show by a circus ringmaster and greeted with signs highlighting the acts in store for the night. Decked out in their finest, Jason Isbell and Jamie Henderson emceed the evening’s festivities.
Every circus has a strong man that performs amazing feats of strength, and there was no shortage of that at this event as the men of La Fete were introduced to the crowd. Still a vital part of the organization, the past Queens of La Fete and honorary members were honored even though they have hung up their sparkly costumes and dancing shoes.
A crowd favorite each year is the evening’s tableau, featuring choreography by the ladies of La Fete. This year, each dance group was inspired by a different aspect of the circus: Tight Rope Walkers, Ringmasters and Trapeze Artists. The tableau featured an opening number set to the The Greatest Show by “The Greatest Showman” cast, and the finale of the evening was set to Come Alive also by “The Greatest Showman” cast.
The true ringmaster to this circus was the 2019 Queen of La Fete. The queen stunned the crowd in a beautiful, two-toned gown with an ivory bodice and a red-satin skirt. The bodice included sparkly, silver beadwork. She finished the look with a shiny silver mask.
Guests enjoyed dancing the night away to the sounds of Fly By Radio amidst the circus decor on the dance floor. It was truly a night to remember.
