The Advantages of Pretty Eating

Photographing food for popular apps like Instagram and Tumblr has changed the entire dynamic of the food industry. Brighter colored meals, artfully arranged are becoming fan-favorites. Professor Charles Spencer of Oxford University has done multiple studies on the interaction between our sight and taste. He has proven that we do, in fact, eat with our eyes first. One trick he shares with his readers is the preference of white plates.  In a recent study, he had the same dessert served on both a black and white plate. The dessert was significantly more liked on the white plate than the black. Spencer states that our senses are generally drawn to stark contrasts.

The millennial generation is typically met with mockery when they reach for their IPhone to snap a picture of their plates before digging in. But, some health benefits have been linked to artisan dining. Brighter, fresher ingredients lend a need for more organic and whole foods. Often, the time spent capturing the perfect photo allows the brain to savor the food before being tasted. This leads to less binge overeating and more slow intake.

So, next time you whip up a quick meal, spend more time considering the ingredients and presentation. Your waistline just might thank you.
